“Vampire Charles”

 About Charles O’Keefe:

Charles O’Keefe lives in the beautiful province of Newfoundland, Canada, with his wife and two feline ‘children,’ Jude and Esther. He works as an I.T. support guy and enjoys many hobbies and activities that include writing, reading, watching fantasy/science-fiction movies and television shows, gaming, poker, walking, acting, martial arts and of course fantasizing about vampires.

He currently has two novels out, books 1 and 2 of  “The Newfoundland Vampire” series.

 And now for the interview…

1.  What’s your favorite book or genre to read?

Ahh to read, usually people ask what genre to I like to write in, so I appreciate the different question. Well I guess it’s changed over time, I used to read science-fiction almost exclusively (and most of that Star Trek) but now I’d say fantasy/horror. I enjoy getting a thrill reading horror tales and find the characters are often quite interesting.

 2.  Have you always wanted to be a writer?

No not really, I’ve always been a creative person but I’m one of those people who wasn’t sure what he wanted to be for a long time (I was finished university before I wanted to be a teacher). I did a little writing for the school paper in high school and more at university but really I didn’t get the writing bug until late, probably when I was around 33-34.

3.  How to “get in the zone” to write?  Any certain quirks that you feel you MUST do?

That’s a good question, hmmm…..I do need time to collect my thoughts. Well first off I can’t write a novel until I’ve done an outline. Then I generally do most of my writing in the morning. So my quirks would be I need to have breakfast, move my laptop to the kitchen table (if it’s not there already), look out the window and then start writing. I find I can only usually do short bursts (30-45 minutes). I also like to take frequent breaks to look out the window, maybe check my e-mail or look at a website. I have written at conventions, farmer’s markets, flea markets, planes and other places though, so really there’s nothing I have to do to write. I generally just have to be in the mood, I can force myself to edit but not to be creative.

4.  What’s your writing style?  Do you brainstorm ideas on paper or just go straight to writing?

I kind of cheated here as I already mentioned this above. In detail though, so I do an outline with each chapter title, the date it happens (in the story) and a brief summary of what happens in each chapter. For book 1 I did an outline as I went (i.e. I kept 2-3 chapters ahead of where I was writing) but for book 2 I did the outline for the whole book in 5-7 hours. Then the second step I do a more detailed outline as each chapter is finished, this time it contains point by point in sequence exactly what happens in each chapter. I do this detailed outline for my editor, Pat, but I do find it helps afterwards during editing and to make sure I don’t do the same things twice (or make some other timeline type error). So the short answer is I brainstorm before, work on an outline and then write. I also try to read over notes on grammar and story structure every week or two to keep the concepts fresh in my mind.

5.  There seems to be some similar qualities between Joseph and yourself, do you feel close to any other characters you’ve written?

Joseph is a younger version of me who made different choices and obviously has some differences (I only wish I was a vampire), so we have a lot of similar qualities. I really do feel close to Cassandra though (my main female character). She is the first character I created that felt real to me (Joseph just didn’t count as he’s me). She’s the one where at the end of book 1 I first thought of her, she had more to say, more to do and was just waiting for me to write it. To be honest I also love Cassandra as a fantasy woman, she’s got everything I could wish for in a woman (including being a vampire), smart, sexy, strong, red hair, adventurous, wise, loving, confident and fun. While she does things I don’t agree with, I admire her courage and I think her attitude and actions are realistic for a 220 year old vampire who has seen a lot of terrible things (and had a lot happen to her). While in book 1 she was a little underdeveloped, I think with my editor’s help she really is a much more realized and interesting character in book 2.

6.  Do you already know how the Newfoundland Vampire series will end, or do you figure it out as you go?

Another good one! Well I do like to plan ahead. I don’t want to give too much away, I will say that I know how a very important event in my world will go (I’ve thought about this battle almost as soon as I started writing book 1) but the end of the series….I think the most honest thing I can say is that after book 4 if I’m still enjoying it and I have a good story to tell it will continue. I don’t want to end up like Anne Rice where the books are complete crap and they are just pumped out for money (in my opinion of course).

 7.  What advice can you give those of us who would love to write, but aren’t sure how to get started?

I must say you came up with great questions, very thought provoking. Well I was like that and I would tell anyone who loves to write to just start small. What delayed me for a long time was thinking about how big a book is when you start, that’s the wrong attitude. Just think about it this way, I’ll write 1 page today, I’ll finish this short story (or chapter) next week…then before you know it you have a body of work or a novel finished. Small steps lead to finished projects. If you love writing just take an idea and run with it (or make an outline if you’re the organized type), either way if you’re enjoying yourself then there’s no downside really, how much you want to do and how far you want to go is all in your hands.

8.  Where can we stalk you?  😉

I love to hear from fans! Here’s the best ways to connect with me:!/TheNLVampire

*I don’t normally add anything like this after an interview, but I have to say thank you, Charles!  I thouroughly enjoyed your answers and they definitely gave me a lot to think about!  I do love the idea of an outline.. that sounds right up my alley.

Paulyanna:  International Rent Boy by Paul Douglas Lovell

Title: Paulyanna International Rent Boy
Author: Paul Douglas Lovell
Publisher: Self Published
Formats Available In: Digital
Released: September 2013

Blurb: Paulyanna: International Rent-boy is an honest and frank portrayal of a working-class male prostitute’s life.
Many factors contribute in delivering the main character onto the streets. Some very typical such as early abandonment, poverty, lack of education and sexual abuse. But Paul does not dwell too much on the past and refuses to allow these events to mar his ambition.
At eighteen a lost train ticket leaves him stranded in the city after a job interview. He uses his questionable wits to make a quick decision that steers him down a rather dodgy path.
Without added glamour or grit, Paul shares the raw accounts of his life as a rent-boy in the 90s, from London to Los Angeles. It may not have been pretty, and there was risk and danger as well as fun and thrills, but Paul had the audacity to succeed in his quest to obtain happiness, security and wealth.
This is not an erotic tale. It is an ordinary account of day-to-day life as viewed from a unique perspective. A peek into what really goes on behind the glassy-eyed smile of a male street worker. Read about his life in this optimistic and fascinating roadbook adventure.

About Paul Douglas Lovell:

A Black Country Lad who now lives in the Black Boy Land or Schwarzbubenland as it is called in Switzerland. Life started off badly and after spending a big part of it on the margins of society working as a rent-boy (gay male prostitute) I eventually found my husband (civil partner) in 2000 and a new chapter in my life began.
Years on and we are still very happily married, or at least I am. He kept every single one of his promises and didn’t tire or change his attitude towards me. Never once have I felt cold, hungry or scared.
I now live in a detached property with a large garden in a small hamlet of 895 residence. Set in the foothills of the Jura mountains. I am surrounded on all sides by hilly forests, a small stream runs through it’s centre. It really is a proper piece of paradise. When I’m feeling extra spiritual it is easy to imagine. We are nestled in the palms of an almighty giant. God if you like. Whom, despite all I had done saw fit to watch over me and guide me to a life worth living. I have a beautiful black cat called Darcy and also a Gordon Setter girl-dog name Asherah. We live an idyllic existence.
I now enjoy the small pleasures in life, gone are the pressures of Big City Life nowadays, I can see sky out of my windows. I experience every season. In the Spring and Summer, whilst out walking in the woods we often make a fire to cook a jumbo sausage. My dog likes sausage walks. Autumn is spend harvesting our homegrown and raking up leaves. I spend a lot of my time gardening. Chopping and stacking wood for the log burner that heats our home throughout the Winter season. I’m a Glippy a glamourous hippy. We are extremely green and energy efficient, I’m a recycling master.
I wear what I call my doggy clothes mostly, saving my glad rags for when visiting the city. I like to pretend I’m living in the olden days and going to town is a really big event. So that is the new improved me. I must admit I do still enjoy cannabis but now, I drink red wine also.
“I always had a dream to become a writer and although not quite there yet am doing everything I can to make it a reality.”

Guest post:  Why did you create this book?

Why did I create this book?  That is a deceptively short question.

My instant answer is for prosperity and vanity. Sorry, I mean posterity.
I wrote an autobiography about a non-celebrity. A portion of an uneducated, working-class person’s life set mainly in the 1990s.
It is my first book, however I have held a desire to become a writer since I drew matchstick men with speech bubbles at time too young to date correctly. If I were to make an educated guess, I would say seven as most of my symptomatic traits began around this age.
So I created because I believe, regardless of sales figures, that I AM a writer.  Why this specific book? Because being my first, it’s a case of write what you know.
I am a novice who is still learning; for instance, that witty prosperity-posterity mix up was actually today’s lesson.
I am not at all educated and when I say ‘not at all’, I mean it. I can remember doing homework once on the first week at BIG school. A novelty that was short lived. At eleven years old, I had only one desire and that was to leave school. A desire I fulfilled much earlier than my peers.
Subsequently, in a life that never did flow smoothly, my career prospects were limited to unqualified not-so-glamorous manual positions. Hindered further by a carefree sociopathic type of attitude towards the law and a wonky moral compass, it was almost inevitable that this damaged package was heading for a bumpy ride.
I wrote a whopping 140,000-word “professionally edited” novel. It is vitally important for me to announce my manuscript has been edited. An investment I made, and was always going to make, to give my story every chance possible and also the respect I thought it merited.
I also know my limits.  After the fifth read-through, I could no longer see the wood (words, in my case) for the trees. As for grammar and punctuation, I know I have no skills in that department.
I spent a lot of my life regaling people with my tales. Captivating and attention-grabbing, I noticed people listened intently. This is how I gained self-confidence in social settings; I hijacked conversations simply because I was uncomfortable with silent pauses. Felt the class clown in me itching to entertain. Whether I fully acknowledge it or not, this stereotypical behaviour was brought on by past influences that have always shaped and steered my life. If I were to omit such strong facts as sexual abuse, I would not be painting an accurate picture of the main character.
However, I am not at all comfortable mentioning this subject so it is enough for me, and you to know it happened. Besides, the twelve-year-period of my story covered in Paulyanna: International Rent-Boy begins when I am already in my late teens. Perhaps one day I will tell my childhood tale too.
This story, crammed full of quirky happenings, strange opinions and insightful observations into an unfamiliar existence, is also intended to give encouragement to people like myself by dispelling the notion that the damage is permanent and life will continue to be shit.
So it is much more than a mere glimpse behind the glassy-eyed smile of a street worker. It is me giving something back, albeit if unconventionally and with a subversive tilt. Sex, drugs and gangster rap with an undercurrent of spirituality and karma.
I do imagine many buyers will happily pick this book up for a second reading and echoes of this story will linger longer than most novels. That is a very arrogant and brave boast I’m making here so I’d best move on quickly.
I make one more claim. I know my life has been both unique and stereotypical. I am an extremely observant people-watcher and I often viewed myself from a lofty viewpoint whilst events unfolded. With complete detachment, and in many cases with astonished disbelief, I planned my retelling. I really hope you like what you read.

HOTDcover 021

About Dina Rae:

Dina Rae is a new author that is here to stay. As a teacher, she brings an academic element to her work. Her research on the Yezidi religion and love of art inspired her story telling for Halo of the Damned. Halo of the Nephilim and Halo of the Madonna are new to the angel series.

Her second novel, The Last Degree, is a fictionalized account of the Freemason’s role in the New World Order. Dina’s grandfather was the Most Worshipful of his lodge. The subject has always held a personal interest.

Bad Juju, is about an old Haitian bokor who mentors two teens in the dark arts. A unique blend of horror, romance, and literary fiction meant for adults and mature teens.
Dina lives with her husband, two daughters, and two dogs outside of Chicago. She is an avid reader, tennis player, movie buff, and self-proclaimed expert on conspiracy theories. She has appeared in several literary blogs, newspapers, e-zines, and radio shows as a guest.

Do You Know Your Zombies? By Dina Rae

Voodoo and zombies were my biggest inspiration for writing Bad Juju.  A great deal of research went into the story.  Most of the plot is filled with authentic elements of Voodoo and zombies. For instance, the most common and believable zombie fact claims that one can turn into a zombie because of mental collapse, disease, infection, and/or radiation.  Zombies stagger around dazed and confused, causing others to panic. Then there is the man-made monster kind or the kind Hollywood and horror authors like me tend to capitalize on.

Zombie interest continues to fascinate the world. Jeffrey Dahmer drilled holes then poured acid down his victim’s heads in hopes of creating his own zombie. His madness didn’t work.

Can man make his own zombie? Are these monsters real?

According to Wade Davis, author of The Serpent of the Rainbow, zombies are real. They are a product of the Voodoo religion. He was originally hired by a pharmaceutical company to find out about the drugs Voduists used in their death rituals. He believed that datura also known as zombie’s cucumber was a plant that could medically make one who ingested it appear to be dead for a certain length of time.

Sounds like the stuff Juliet used to fake her death. Could Shakespeare known about the magical zombie-making plant?

Datura or sometimes Cimora, a close relative of Datura’s, eventually wears off but leaves the victim in a state of confusion, highly susceptible to the art of persuasion. Presto! A zombie slave is at the captor’s disposal. Mr. Davis didn’t just find his datura flower, but witnessed zombie phenomena as he immersed himself within the Haitian culture.

Bad Juju is a unique blend of horror, romance, and fantasy. Besides The Serpent and the Rainbow, I read volumes of other Voodoo material and watched hours of TV specials. Some of the terms I learned can be found below:

Bokor: A wizard who practices black magic, a zombie maker.

Loa: deity/spirit

Ghede Family: A family of loas known as the spirits of the dead. Three barons rule the family. Baron Samedi is the loa of resurrection. Baron Kriminel is the most feared loa associated with cannibalism and souls. He’s honored on The Day of the Dead. Baron LaCroix is the loa of the dead and sexuality.

Poppet: Voodoo doll

Ti-bon-ange: “little good angel” The part of the soul that represents a person’s individuality.

Gros-bon-ange: “great good angel” Part of the soul that is collected into a reservoir of the Cosmos or spirit world.

Baka: Voodoo spirits in animal form.

Loup Garou: werewolf

Djab: a devil

Dessounin: Death ritual that separates the gros-bon-ange from the body.

Bizango Society: Secret society of Vodouists. They have Freemason-like qualities such as aprons, secret handshakes, oaths, hierarchy, and symbols. Legend states they change into animals at will. They are known for stealing black cats and boiling them to death for Voodoo services. They drink each other’s blood from a human skull chalice.

Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo gives him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school.
Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust.
Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island’s reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite and returns in a catatonic state.

Title: Spark
Series: The Hellfire Series
Author: Karyn Pearson
Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy
Publisher: The Writing Network
Formats Available In: Digital

Release Date: June 23, 2013

Blurb: For centuries, the powers of Heaven and Hell have been at war, locked in a perpetual stalemate. Fifty years ago, the war spilled out on Earth and the last modern age of man ended. Humanity now finds itself at the brink of annihilation, barely surviving in small pockets of civilization scattered across the globe. But even in the direst of circumstances, the human spirit lives on.

Now, in this post-apocalypse, humanity has but one choice: resist or die. In order to combat the forces of Hell, man has learned to fight, training from their youth to hunt the demons that threaten their very existence.

Twenty-five years ago, a demon hunter dared rise against an ancient demon family, the Saligia—the Seven Deadly Sins—and was cursed for her defiance. The curse appeared in the guise of an innocent: the huntress’s own daughter, Ardentia, who had been born with a demon soul attached to her own.

In the present day, Ardentia, now grown, seeks to free her mother from her curse by hunting down the demons responsible. But the road ahead will be difficult now that the demon within her has awakened. Trusting him is dangerous, especially when he can turn on her at a moment’s notice. Others have warned her that succumbing to the demon will be her own downfall.

Now Ardentia must decide what she’s willing to lose: her mother’s freedom or herself.

The demon snapped his fingers and the daemonis igni behind Ardentia grew blindingly bright and white-hot, the flames reaching over forty feet high and surging straight toward her. She froze with fear, knowing that in a few seconds she was about to die, burned alive in the fires of Hell.
“Ardentia!” Noxius was shouting. “Run! Run now!”
She was too scared to move. She could not even muster up the strength to take that first step. Somehow, even if she did run away, she knew that the flames or Gula would end up devouring her anyway.
Distantly, she could hear the voices of her comrades, yelling for her to run, to find higher ground, but still, she could not move.
Noxius snarled with irritation, muttering a stream of curses in lingua daemon.
“Idiot girl!” he hissed at her. “I’ve no other choice. I simply cannot allow us both to die here.”
And then an indescribable force slammed against the inside of Ardentia’s skull. She saw bright lights pop in front of her eyes, nearly blinded with pain, and dropped to her knees in a daze. Dimly, she could feel Noxius seizing control; his power coursed through her, flooding her with an unimaginable strength and power that she was incapable of using. Her hand started to reach for the reliquary dangling from her belt, only to feel an invisible hand within her snatching it away.
“What are you doing?” she asked weakly.
“You’ll thank me in a moment,” Noxius answered her.
Ardentia’s eyes fell shut and she thought she could hear the sound of wings being spread then close around her. If she leant to the side ever so slightly, she swore she could feel the leathery velvet of the wing brush against her cheek.
An intense heat passed over her; she realized that it was probably the demonic fire, having reached her at last. She inhaled sharply, preparing to scream as she burned in the hellish pyre, only to find that she did not need to. There was only heat but no flames. She was not burned.

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still – despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series ‘The Wanderer Trilogy’ and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series ‘Elemental Killers’ before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

“I couldn’t put it down. So I finished it last night and all I can say is WOW! This book was amazing and different.” Brianna (Book Blogger)

“I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)

“I will admit I scoffed at the way it started but in the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had such a good plot and the story structure was sound.” Kacii – The Kooky Bookworm (Book Blogger)

Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop.
In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot.
A cold shudder shot through me.
Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me.
My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now – dark and threatening.
Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn’t stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house.
Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make sure that I hadn’t been seeing things. The old saying “the camera never lies,” came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me.

About Mysti Parker:

Mysti Parker (pseudonym) is a full time wife, mother of three, and a writer. Her first novel, A Ranger’s Tale was published in January, 2011 by Melange Books, and the second in the fantasy romance series, Serenya’s Song, was published in April 2012. The highly anticipated third book, Hearts in Exile, has already received some great reviews. The Tallenmere series has been likened to Terry Goodkind’s ‘Sword of Truth’ series, but is probably closer to a spicy cross between Tolkien and Mercedes Lackey.

Mysti’s other writings have appeared in the anthologies Hearts of Tomorrow, Christmas Lites, and Christmas Lites II. Her flash fiction has appeared on the online magazine EveryDayFiction. She has also served as a class mentor in Writers Village University’s six week free course, F2K.  Mysti reviews books for SQ Magazine, an online specfic publication, and is the proud owner of Unwritten, a blog voted #3 for eCollegeFinder’s Top Writing Blogs award. She resides in Buckner, KY with her husband and three children.

Blurb:   Somewhere, hidden in the waters of the Southern Sea, lies an island unlike any other. Within the amber glow of its pyrogem-laden cliffs, legend says the very heart of the dragon god Drae keeps the island, and its occupants, alive. Loralee Munroviel, daughter of Leogard’s High Priestess Arianne, had no idea what she would face when she arrived by boat ten years ago and was left alone in exile. All she knew about Draekoria’s inhabitants was written in one tattered notebook. Now, her life revolves around keeping Drae’s descendants happy. Never in her life did she imagine being a Dragon Keeper.
Captain Igrorio Everlyn, known as Sir Robert to his unit of Holy Paladins, has faced his share of hell, battling the evils of Emperor Sarvonn’s tyranny and the dark god Tyr’s abominations. But none of that compares to the ten years of hell he’s been without Loralee, presumed dead.
One freak storm changes everything. Now the two of them must fight to re-establish the delicate balance of the island before the dragons take things into their own hands.  Through it all, they discover the secrets that kept them, and their hearts, exiled for a decade.

From Chapter 3

After a shipwreck, Sir Robert wakes up in a strange cottage, only to find Loralee, the love of his life, whom he thought had been dead for a decade… “I don’t understand. What is this place?”
“It’s an island. Very few know of its existence.”
I shook my head, trying to clear the fog of this confusing dream come to life. “But, why would you be here, and why would you be sorry? Unless…”The words wouldn’t come. My racing mind pitched in to help. Unless she didn’t want to marry me after all.  Wrenching pain I’d kept tucked inside broke free, and I clambered to my feet. Loralee
followed suit, backing herself into the small dining table. I tried, but could not hide the bitter anger in my words. “How could you do this to me? Do you have any idea what I’ve been through?”Her eyes widened. She clutched the table with one hand and her robe with the other. “What you’ve been through? I didn’t want this. I was forced here.”
“What do you mean, forced here? Where are your shackles?” My voice roared through the little cottage as I gestured around me with one arm. “Where are the bars? This looks like no prison I’ve ever seen.” Her voice cracked the air, rivaling with my own. “I was betrayed, forced into exile. Don’t you understand? I never wanted to leave you. I never wanted anything so much as I wanted you.”Pacing away, I closed my eyes and breathed deeply. I had to calm myself, to let the weight of this discovery, the improbability of her explanation to sink into my waterlogged brain.
I couldn’t bring myself to look at her just yet, so I stared at my bare feet instead. “Why didn’t you tell me, write to me?”“I tried. I begged the supply ship crew to bring my letters to you. They always took them, but never brought one in return. I suspect they destroyed them, but I had no way of knowing.” She sucked in a shaky breath as though trying to hold back her tears. “I never stopped loving you.” Turning back to face her, I felt like a mindless beast. Here I was, raging against the love of my life when she’d all but been brought back from the dead. “Loralee.” I eased toward her. She cringed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Without a word, I leaned in and pressed my forehead to hers, allowing myself to breathe in her scent for the first time in a decade. We stood suspended like that for a while, lost in time, and emerging from a purgatory neither of us had imagined ten years ago. I would have been content to stand like that forever, but Loralee burst into tears and wilted to the floor.I followed her down and opened the quilt to wrap us both inside. I held her tight while she cried. While I cried.
I finally got enough breath to speak again. “What did you mean by forced here? They told me you were…” I couldn’t say it, not with her warm and so very alive against me.“I know.”
The weight of it all came crashing down on me. “This is my fault, isn’t it? You’re here because of me.”She made no attempt to wipe her cheeks, but shook her head and stared at the rafters as though entreating the gods. “No, it’s not your fault. Not at all. There is so much to explain, I don’t know where to start.”
I couldn’t comprehend any of it, so I focused on the here and now. “You found me on the shore?”She nodded.
“The crew, Francis…did you find anyone else out there?”
“No, I had Xax-, I mean, no, I searched but didn’t find anyone else.”
The familiar weight of grief squeezed my chest, and a few more tears escaped before I could stop them. She pulled me close and whispered, “I’m so sorry. I know how much you loved him. We all did.”
“We all grieved for you. You’ve been here…all this time?”“Yes.”
“By the gods, Loralee, I’ve missed you so much.” I put my wet cheek against hers and pressed my lips to her soft skin. “Part of me died the day I thought you… please…just tell me how you ended up here.”Loralee took a few deep breaths and finally pulled away from me. She caressed my cheek and smiled weakly. “I’ll make us a pot of tea. And then, I think we should start at the beginning, back to the Great Plague and when we first met. Do you remember that?”Smiling past the sadness, I covered her hand with mine and closed my eyes. “How could I ever forget?”

Blurb: Sometimes you want something so badly you are willing to abandon everything.
Eighteen years ago, Jaynee Monroe married the man of her dreams, became the mother of four, and fulfilled her career goals. About to turn forty, she senses something is missing from her idyllic life. While Googling her name in an attempt to find herself, she unearths something so impossible, she contemplates her own sanity. Seeking answers, she embarks on a journey to discover the truth, only to end up abducted by a deranged Caycee took the road less traveled. Rejecting a marriage proposal from the only decent man she ever knew, she ventures to California to become famous.
Eighteen years later, success has left her alone and miserable. Attempting to locate her lost love on Facebook, she discovers his infatuation with her. Not only does his presumed-dead wife have Caycee’s uncommon middle name, it appears he has photo-shopped her face over hers.

Never could Caycee and Jaynee have imagined decisions they made years earlier would threaten not only their lives but also their loved ones. Caycee must now reunite with the southern gent she dismissed eighteen years ago and convince him to accompany her to New York to locate his wife, the most important person in both their lives.

Excerpt:  Jaynee awoke with a start, salty tears streaming down her cheeks, burning her already chapped lips. She attempted to swallow, but didn’t have enough saliva to moisten her mouth. It’d just been a nightmare. The nightmare she used to have nightly after her father committed suicide. Though, she hadn’t had it in years. Not since Jordan had taken her away from her previous life, providing a stable home, love, and strong arms to shield her from the demons that haunted her.
Unfortunately, Jordan wasn’t here, and her surroundings were all too real. Pinpricks of sunlight streaked through the corners of the shaded windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
The room was still dark in most spots, but she could almost make out her surroundings. It looked like a cabin of some sort. The walls were a dingy off-white or possibly just stained from years of exposure, but the ceiling and trim were dark wood along with the slatted floors. A musty scent permeated the area, irritating her sinuses, but she couldn’t even scratch her nose. Cuffs still secured her to the four bedposts. What kind of sicko would do such a thing?  Her arms and legs ached from the position they’d been in all night, and she had to go to the bathroom something awful.
When she opened her mouth to speak, nothing but a croak escaped, leaving a trail of lava in her parched throat. “Hel-lo?” Though her voice had cracked, she attempted to sound friendly. Screaming or sobbing wouldn’t do any good. Not that she had the strength or vocal cords anyway.
She wasn’t in the city; only the country would be as dark as it’d been last night when her assailant brought her here. Even if she screamed her head off, no one would hear.
“Please,” she tried again. “I really have to use the bathroom.”
The door opened finally, the hinges protesting in a lengthy screech, begging for oil. Her captor entered the room still wearing a black ski mask, gloved, and the same dark jeans and thick overcoat he’d had on the previous evening. He wasn’t too tall or heavy. If given the chance, she could probably take him. Jordan had taught her a few things. But as long as he had the gun trained on her, she’d have to be submissive.
His gauntleted hand unlocked just one of her wrists. Then placing the key in her hand, he stepped back. Obviously she was to unlock her other restraints. She didn’t waste any time. She unlatched her left hand, then both of her ankles. After rubbing them to increase circulation, she jumped out of the bed on the opposite side of her detainer. He motioned with the gun that she should move to the door on the far side of the room. She did as instructed, opening the door to a small bathroom with just a sink and toilet. No window. She quickly relieved herself. It felt incredible; she’d actually been in pain.
When finished, she opened the medicine cabinet and cubbyhole under the sink, finding nothing usable as a weapon. Both rooms were completely barren, stripped of everything.
The abduction had not been a coincidence, but premeditated.

Jenna Bernel

I live tucked along the bluffs in the Midwest, spending my days lost in the world of fantasy. When I’m not writing, I’m reading and drinking way too much caffeine to satisfymy love of both. Growing up I traveled extensively through the competitive dance circuit, unaware that at the time those experiences would provide my future career an endless stream of inspiration for the captivating drama of Young Adult Fiction.
I enjoy all things travel, food and adventure. While doing research for a trip to Ireland the idea for my book series, The Secret Trinity, came to life and would be the beginning of my greatest adventure yet.

Thank you for stopping by and joining us for our stop on the Read-A-Long portion of The Rebels by Elizabeth Lang virtual tour. We are excited to post this segment of the story and we hope you enjoy it too!

On the cusp of freedom, Adrian Stannis is plunged into the world of bounty hunters and rebels, each one valuing his head with the kind of single-minded intensity that does not bode well for his dream of peace and a fully stocked lab in a quiet and obscure corner of the galaxy.

Dragged along against his will by a barbarian intent on selling him back to the Empire, Adrian ‘accidentally’ kidnaps an emergency room doctor–because that is the kind of thing he does, while Kali and Bryce try to find him and become embroiled in an adventure of their own, one that leads to a sinister mystery that might destroy them all.

Part adventure, part misadventure, this tale packs one punch after another until the final shocking ending.

 The Rebels – Chapter 15

Adrian stared at the self-professed rebel with a blank expression on his face. If the man had said two-headed aliens, he could not have been more surprised. “You’re not smugglers.”
We’re free traders,” said Trey. There was a confident lift of his head, as if the title were a uniform he wore proudly.
Smugglers with a different name,” he said dismissively, twisting his wrists in the cuffs, trying to ease the spreading numbness. Knowing who these people were did not tell him if they intended to honor an agreement bound only by commerce.
Trey leaned forward, his fingers tensing around the grip, aiming a little too close to Adrian’s head. “We’re free traders.”
We transport supplies for the rebel alliance.”
For a hefty price most likely,” said Adrian with an insulting lilt. He knew the rates these smugglers charged for their ‘transportation services’. It had cost a sizeable chunk of the bounty hunter’s bank account. It was a piece of information he had not seen fit to tell Argus yet.
We have to eat.”
You could buy a chain of restaurants with the money I’m paying you.”
Yeah well, we have to live,” Trey said defensively, emphasizing this with a wave of the muzzle in Adrian’s face.
Adrian followed the movement nervously. With the proximity of the gun, it only took a single mistake to be the last one and he currently didn’t have the luxury of moving out of its way.
He kept his voice even. “Which is why I contacted you. What I did not expect was your affiliation with the rebels.”
You have something against rebels?”
I have no feelings about them one way or the other.”
You should considering who you are.”
Adrian fixed him with a penetrating stare. He was getting a suffocating feeling, the kind where people were making plans for his life without consulting him first. Why did they always do that? Why couldn’t people leave him alone?
What do you intend to do with me?” he asked.
The sharp bark of a phaser cut off any chance for a reply, followed by several bursts in quick succession. Adrian stretched his cuffs towards the door, his ears straining.
Trey’s lips curled in a nervy half-smile. “It’s your friend. We set a trap for him.”
He’s not my friend. He’s a killer.”
If only he had a few more seconds, long enough for Trey to respond to the question. Unanswered, it hung in the air like a noose waiting for a neck.
You paid us to neutralize him. He’s going to be neutralized.”
The shots stopped, filling the pause with a sinister silence.
A growing uneasiness made Adrian’s skin crawl. “What do you mean by neutralize?”
Trey motioned him to be quiet and put his ear to the door.
You’re going to kill him?”
The free trader whispered, “That’s what you paid for. Sounds like they’re done.”
The bottom dropped out of Adrian’s stomach and his face paled. These people weren’t supposed to be assassins. They were supposed to capture the bounty hunter and remove him as a threat. He leaned into the cuffs and they bit into his wrists with malice. It never occurred to him that ‘neutralize’ would involve killing.
He took a shuddering breath. “You made a mistake. I made a mistake.”
What?” Trey turned to ask when the door burst open, knocking him back as a fist hammered into the side of his head. He dropped like a dead weight, thudding to the deck as Argus shoved the door the rest of the way.
Adrian froze at the appearance of the hulking ex-soldier and a wave of relief washed over him.
We have to get out of here,” Argus wheezed, pressing a rapidly spreading red stain on his right side just below the ribs. His eyes were bright, feverish. “It was a trap. They were going to sell us to the Empire.”
Adrian refrained from correcting him. He looked down at the unconscious Trey. With the bounty hunter alive and here, it only left one possibility. “You killed the others?”
What do you think?” Argus staggered over and unlocked the handcuffs.
Of course you did. That’s what killers do.” Adrian’s hands clenched as his wrists pulled free.
Don’t even think it,” growled Argus, the muzzle of his gun magically appearing under Adrian’s chin, forcing it up.
I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I’m injured, not dead. Even with one arm and one leg, I can still beat you to a pulp, so don’t try anything.”
I wasn’t thinking of it.”
Then you’re either a liar or a fool. This would be the perfect opportunity to try something.”
I don’t need to knock you out to escape; I only have to wait. The blood loss will take care of the rest.”
Don’t hold your breath.” Argus grabbed a towel from the shelf and pressed it to his blood-soaked shirt. He cinched his belt over it and zipped up the jacket. “Let’s go.” He shoved the rucksack into Adrian’s hands.

Kali covered her nose, suppressing a sneeze. Every brush of her knees on the metal tunnel, every whisper, echoed in the confined space, sounding unnaturally loud.
Bryce crawled ahead, holding a hand torch in his left hand. He rapped it on the side and the thing flickered.
Damn. I think the charge is going.”
We’d better move faster then.”
You don’t have to tell me twice.”
Adrian felt close; she was almost certain he was in the spaceport, or at least nearby. They had to find him soon.
We should have used the service entrance,” she whispered.
And get ourselves caught? No thanks,” said Bryce. He brushed aside a cobweb and yelped as a red-spotted spider skittered away.
What’s wrong?”
It was just…nothing.”
I have a feeling Adrian’s close. He may already be on a ship.”
In the shadows, Bryce was a dark blog twisting around to look at her.
Then we’re sunk.”
No, we’re not. I’m not giving up.” She pushed his leg. “Keep going.”
It’s too bad you can’t tell where he is.” He continued forward.
You know I can’t do that with humans.”
Yeah, I know. We’re too alien for you.”
We’re not that different,” said Kali. It was an old prejudice she generally tended to ignore. “Tellarans are human too, or humanoid as you Earthers like to call us. The original settlers on our world came from Earth over a millennia ago. Genetically, we’re identical except for two genes that encourage psi abilities.”
He slowed again. “I thought all Tellarans had psi abilities.”
Not all of us, but there are more with each successive generation.”
I didn’t know that.”
It’s not common knowledge.”
It was information Adrian had taken the time to research when they first met. His natural mistrust of people drove him to find out as much as he could about the woman who had been assigned to work with him, but she had sensed something else, an undercurrent of personal interest.
She continued, “My people believed the human condition could be improved through genetic engineering. They weren’t looking for psi abilities specifically. At first, we thought it was a flaw in the genome.”
Some flaw. I’d love to be able to read minds.”
You’re only thinking about the uses of telepathy.”
Of course.”
Not the ramifications. It wasn’t easy for the progenitors. Some became insane before we realized what was happening. Some were driven mad because they couldn’t shut out the voices in their heads. Now mental discipline is mandatory and—”
Ow!” Bryce rubbed his head.
Now what?”
We’re here.”

Adrian shifted the rucksack to his left hand. It didn’t seem this heavy when the bounty hunter was carrying it. He shuffled along, a combination of weariness and the need to draw out the time until this man collapsed.
The ham-fisted hand at his collar yanked back and Adrian choked.
Quit stalling, Stannis,” Argus rasped.
I’m still waiting.”
I’m still breathing.” Argus twisted the material and pushed him ahead.
Adrian gasped. “Not much from the sounds of it.”
Their boots clanged on the mesh as they headed for the stairs. If only there was something he could do to speed the process along. How much blood did one person have to lose in order to fall unconsciousness?
The injured man leaned on his shoulder, hissing through clenched teeth. “Keep going.”
Even if we get off this ship, you cannot get very far in your condition.”
Don’t bet on it.”
I’m not a gambling man, but it wouldn’t be much of a gamble.”
Kali’s words entered his mind. Adrian, we’re inside the port. Try to stay on the planet until we can find you.
A hatch creaked opened on the right and two men in faded military fatigues rushed at them from a side gangway, aiming at the closest target, which appeared to be Adrian’s head.
No!” Argus shouted, jerking back, sending Adrian flying. The first bark of his gun sliced through the air as a tracer tore into the right side of his chest. He staggered, crashing into the rail with an oomph as he continued firing, grabbing onto the top bar for support.
Adrian smashed into a closed hatchway and crumpled to the gangway, stunned. The freshly painted gray walls swam towards him as he fought to stay conscious. The rest of the scene played out like a slow-moving dream as he clutched at a rail to pull himself up but couldn’t seem to reach it.
Short spears of deadly rays flared on the metal walls like a celebratory light display. Panels sparked and one burst into dancing flames of partially nude women. One of them looked like Kali. Adrian shook his head and groaned as an upsurge of nausea overtook him. He forced his mind to stay focused.
Double bursts hit one crew member and he toppled like a statue with its legs cut off at the knees. The other screamed as a fiery beam plunged into the middle of his chest. His pistol dropped from slack hands and he fell forward.
The bounty hunter slid down the railing, his gun still clasped tightly in fingers that seemed molded to the grip. The adrenaline-fueled flame in his eyes dulled as he slumped forward. It was the last thing Adrian remembered before a rush of darkness washed over him.

Argus groaned and lifted his head. Death rattled in his lungs and a heavy weight of agony crushed down on his chest. It took all his strength to drag air into his lungs.
The gray-coveralled attackers lay where they fell.
It was a good battle and he was the last man left…lying down. He chuckled and groaned as pain clawed through his body. His blood dribbled down, squeezing through the mesh and splashing to the deck below.
In a way, it was a relief.
He angled his head back. Stannis lay on the walkway like a folded up rag. The man was finally free and he wasn’t conscious enough to appreciate it.
At least he finally stop talking, a minor miracle. The man was determined though, and he was loyal to his friends. It made him somewhat tolerable.
It was too bad that it was only a matter of time before he was caught.
His hand curled tighter around the gun. It was an old friend, staying with him longer than anyone he had ever known.
They were a good team, mainly reliable and almost as deadly as he was. He slid the safety into place and tossed it carefully.
